Quelques lecteurs amis me disent que j'ai eu la main lourde sur les Impressionnistes. Pas du tout, leur réponds-je, je me suis retenu.

Par exemple, je me suis retenu de dire qu'ils me font penser à cette phrase de Louis-Ferdinand Céline : Un prolétaire est un bourgeois qui n'a pas réussi.

( Je ne sais s'il avait les Communards en tête, car les multiples instances de la Commune étaient farcies de petits bourgeois : je ne l'invente pas, c'est sourcé, et j'en parle dans cet admirable ouvrage qu'est De la chute du Second Empire à celle de la Commune, qui se trouve ici en vente à un prix si ridiculement bas que même Harpagon n'aurait osé imaginer).

Appliqué aux Impressionnistes, la citation de L-F Céline donne : 

Un Impressionniste est un peintre bourgeois qui n'a pas réussi.

Voilà, c'est un peu sévère, mais pas tout à fait injuste, en tout cas source de réflexion. Cette invitation à la réflexion est un sorte de haïku, juste pour annoncer que mon prochain billet portera sur le Japonisme en France.

Some reader friends tell me that I had a heavy hand on the Impressionists. Not at all, I tell them, I held back.

For example, I refrained from saying that they remind me of this sentence from Louis-Ferdinand Céline: A proletarian is a bourgeois who has not succeeded.

Alcuni amici lettori mi dicono che ho avuto una mano pesante nei confronti degli Impressionisti. Niente affatto, dico loro, mi sono trattenuto.

Per esempio, mi sono trattenuto dal dire che mi ricordano questa frase di Louis-Ferdinand Céline: Un proletario è un borghese che non ha avuto successo.

(Non so se avesse in mente i Comunardi, perché le molteplici autorità della Comune erano piene di piccolo borghesi: non lo invento io, è di provenienza, e ne parlo in questa mirabile opera che è Dal caduta del Secondo Impero a quella della Comune, che qui è in vendita ad un prezzo così ridicolo che nemmeno Arpagone avrebbe osato immaginare).

Applicata agli Impressionisti, la citazione di L-F Céline dà:

Un impressionista è un pittore borghese fallito.

Ecco, è un po' duro, ma non del tutto ingiusto, comunque fonte di riflessione. Questo invito alla riflessione è una sorta di haiku, proprio per annunciare che il mio prossimo post si concentrerà sul giapponismo in Francia.
